Rio Vista Retreat

2019

Design Intent

Set against the rugged beauty of the New Mexico high desert, the Rio Vista Retreat project blends the refinement of a French villa with the resilience of the region’s natural landscape. This transformation focused on creating an elegant, functional outdoor living space while preserving the character of the land. The vision centered on soft blues, purples, whites, and deep reds—evoking the romance of a European countryside—while ensuring the design could withstand the challenges of an arid climate, drastic grade changes, and a remote location.

The existing outdoor spaces felt disconnected and underutilized, lacking the necessary flow for a welcoming retreat. A carefully crafted flagstone courtyard and backyard patio brought cohesion to the landscape, creating inviting spaces for relaxation and entertaining. Winding stone walkways, softened by plantings of thyme and speedwell, connected key areas, leading to a serene river patio overlooking the Rio Medio. Rustic river rock walls, an integral feature of the site, were restored and expanded, incorporating terracing to manage drainage and erosion while enhancing visual interest. At the entrance, a new crusherfine pathway reshaped the front courtyard, directing the eye toward the home while framing a striking sculptural installation.

Water conservation and sustainability were essential to this project. An advanced hydro-zoned irrigation system was installed to ensure efficient water use, incorporating a Hunter ICC timer and Solar Sync sensor for precise management. With existing Piñon and Aspen trees struggling in harsh conditions, a dedicated irrigation strategy and soil enrichment efforts revitalized and protected these vital elements of the landscape. Along the riverbank, dense overgrowth had obscured views of the water. By selectively clearing invasive species while preserving ecological integrity, the design restored an unobstructed connection to the river, allowing movement and light back into the area.

Locally sourced materials played a key role in creating a landscape that feels timeless and connected to its surroundings. River rock harvested from the property was repurposed for terraces and pathways, while a selection of native and climate-adapted plants ensured long-term sustainability. Passive water harvesting techniques directed natural precipitation to critical areas, reducing the need for supplemental irrigation. To extend the landscape’s usability into the evening, a low-voltage copper lighting system with motion sensors was installed, providing both ambiance and security without disrupting the natural setting.

Over the course of a year, the Rio Vista Retreat project evolved into a vibrant landscape that continues to mature with the seasons. From the flagstone patio, the gentle glow of evening light now illuminates a space where the soothing sound of the river can be enjoyed, blending luxury with the wild beauty of the high desert.
